Our practice consists of several different "types" of patients:
ALL PATIENTS WHO ARE REFERRED TO DR. VITA FOR TMJ ISSUES ARE INFORMED THAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE ALL OF THEIR NON-TMJ-RELATED DENTAL CARE AT THEIR REGULAR DENTIST'S OFFICE.
TMJ patients often require additional restorative dental services as well as routine dental care. Dr. Vita works closely with referring dentists to see that any necessary dental adjustments such as bite correction and other non-surgical procedures are addressed as well as periodic checkups and cleanings.

General dentistry focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of common oral health conditions for patients of all ages. It includes routine exams, professional cleanings, fillings, basic restorative work and screenings that detect problems early. Regular general dentistry keeps small issues from becoming complex problems and supports long-term oral function and comfort.
Beyond the mouth, good dental care contributes to overall health by reducing infection risk and helping identify systemic issues that show oral signs. General dentists also coordinate care with specialists when advanced treatment is needed, providing continuity and comprehensive planning. For most patients, consistent general dentistry visits are the foundation of a healthy, functional smile.
At Vita Head, Neck & Facial Pain Relief Center our general dentistry services include routine cleanings and exams, composite (tooth-colored) fillings, crowns, inlays and onlays, sealants and oral cancer screenings. We also offer preventive hygiene treatments, night guards, athletic mouth guards and non-surgical gum care such as scaling and root planing. These services are intended to maintain oral health, restore damaged teeth and prevent future problems.
In addition to standard restorative procedures, our practice provides aesthetic options like porcelain veneers and professional whitening to improve smile appearance when desired. We use intraoral cameras and digital radiography to document findings and explain treatment needs clearly to patients. This combination of preventive, restorative and cosmetic care helps patients maintain function and confidence in their smiles.
Most patients benefit from professional dental exams and cleanings every six months, which allows dentists to monitor oral health, remove plaque and tartar and catch issues early. Some patients with higher risk factors such as periodontal disease, a history of heavy decay or certain medical conditions may need more frequent visits, which your dentist will recommend based on individualized risk assessment. Regular visits also make it easier to maintain preventive measures like fluoride treatments and sealants when appropriate.
During a routine visit the dental team evaluates gum health, checks for signs of decay, reviews oral hygiene habits and updates any necessary imaging. That visit is an opportunity to discuss concerns such as sensitivity, bleeding gums or changes in bite and to review personalized home-care strategies. Consistent follow-up supports long-term oral stability and can reduce the need for complex restorative work later on.
General dentistry and TMJ care often overlap because bite relationships, tooth wear and jaw function affect the temporomandibular joints and surrounding muscles. Patients referred for TMJ evaluation frequently require restorative adjustments or protective appliances to stabilize their bite and reduce strain on the joints. General dental services such as occlusal equilibration, night guards and restorative reconstruction can be important components of a comprehensive TMJ treatment plan.
When TMJ symptoms are present, the dental team assesses occlusion, joint function and dental factors that may contribute to pain or dysfunction, then coordinates treatment with TMJ specialists as needed. This integrated approach ensures that both the dental and musculoskeletal contributors to TMJ issues are addressed. Clear communication between the general dentist and TMJ provider helps preserve tooth health while improving jaw comfort and function.
For a filling, the dentist will remove decayed tooth material, clean the area and restore the tooth with a suitable material such as composite resin, then check the bite for comfort and function. A crown procedure typically requires preparing the tooth to receive the restoration, taking impressions or digital scans, and placing a temporary crown while the final restoration is fabricated. At a follow-up visit the permanent crown is seated, adjusted and polished to restore full chewing function and aesthetics.
Modern restorative techniques focus on conserving healthy tooth structure, controlling sensitivity and ensuring the restoration blends with surrounding teeth. Local anesthesia is used as needed to keep the procedure comfortable, and the team will review aftercare instructions including hygiene recommendations and any short-term dietary precautions. Restorative dentistry aims to return teeth to a stable, comfortable and durable state while minimizing future problems.
Preventive care is the cornerstone of general dentistry because it reduces the risk of cavities, gum disease and other oral problems that can affect overall health. Preventive services include professional cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, regular exams and patient education about brushing, flossing and diet. These measures identify and address early signs of disease before they require extensive restorative treatment.
Consistent preventive care also supports better outcomes for restorative and cosmetic procedures by creating a healthy environment for restorations to last. Dentists tailor preventive regimens to each patient's needs based on risk factors such as genetics, medical history and oral habits. By investing in prevention, patients often experience fewer emergencies, less invasive procedures and improved long-term function.
Amalgam-free fillings, commonly called composite or tooth-colored fillings, are made from resin materials that are matched to the color of natural teeth. These restorations bond directly to tooth structure, allowing for more conservative tooth preparation and a natural appearance. Many patients choose composite fillings for aesthetic reasons and to avoid the metallic look of traditional amalgam.
Composite materials are suitable for a wide range of restorations and are routinely used for both front and back teeth depending on the size and location of the cavity. Your dentist will evaluate the extent of decay, the tooth's function and your aesthetic goals to recommend the appropriate material. Proper placement and finishing help ensure the restoration performs well and integrates with surrounding tooth enamel.
Oral cancer screening is a standard part of routine dental exams and includes a visual and tactile evaluation of the lips, tongue, floor of mouth, cheeks, throat and other oral tissues. Dental professionals look for unusual lumps, ulcers that do not heal, color changes or other signs that warrant further investigation. When findings are suspicious, the dentist documents the area, may take photographs or imaging, and discusses appropriate next steps with the patient.
Early detection increases the likelihood of successful treatment, so regular screenings are important even for patients without symptoms. The dental team will also review risk factors such as tobacco or alcohol use and refer patients for specialist evaluation or biopsy when necessary. Clear communication and timely follow-up are part of the practice's commitment to patient safety and health.
When patients are referred for TMJ or specialized dental care, the Vita Head, Neck & Facial Pain Relief Center team maintains open communication with the referring dentist to ensure continuity of non‑TMJ dental care. We share diagnostic findings, recommended treatment plans and any necessary adjustments so that restorative or preventive work can continue seamlessly at the patient’s regular dental office. Coordination helps prevent duplicate procedures and supports a unified approach to the patient’s oral health.
If additional specialists are needed, such as periodontists, oral surgeons or orthodontists, we collaborate to sequence treatments appropriately and protect both dental function and jaw health. Clear, timely information exchange enables all providers to work toward the same goals for comfort, function and long‑term stability. Patients benefit from a team-based approach that respects their overall treatment plan and preferred providers.
General dentistry for children focuses on prevention, early detection and establishing positive habits that support lifelong oral health. Pediatric visits typically include gentle examinations, professional cleanings, fluoride applications when appropriate and guidance on brushing, flossing and nutrition. Sealants and early interceptive orthodontic evaluations may be recommended to reduce decay risk and address developing bite concerns.
Parents can expect the dental team to explain findings in plain language, discuss preventive strategies and outline any necessary follow-up care in a family‑friendly way. Establishing a dental home early helps children become comfortable with routine visits and allows the dentist to monitor growth and development over time. If specialty care is indicated, the practice will coordinate referrals and support parents through the process.
